Sakura bana Judo kwai

Sakura Bana Kwai means cherry blossom club and the original club was in Cambridge in a village called Cherryhinton, this being the nearest translation into Japanese. The club was the largest in East Anglia in the 50’s and 60’s when I was a member until I moved away. As the original club has now closed we decided to use the name for our group of clubs.

International Budo Council

The International Budo Council is the international organisation that the clubs belong to. It was formed in the 50’s by Kenshiro Abbe 8th dan who developed the style of judo that we practice called Kyu Shin Do. This group also covers karate, aikido and kendo. Kenshiro Abbe came to England in the 50’s and taught in many clubs around the country including the original Sakura Bana Kwai. He returned to Japan in the 70’s where he lived until he died.

KYU means to search or study
SHIN means universal truth, or law. To be true to oneself.
DO means “the way” a way of life, or self-discipline.

Kyu Shin Do is applied within judo practice and theory, from the mental as well as the physical point of view. It is the way by which many important ideas may be understood. Firstly by the control of ones physical actions, and later by control of ones thoughts and feelings, through the practice of judo.
