Dojo Etiquette

1 Always respect your instructor, and higher grades. Be considerate to everyone with whom you practice.
2 Try to adopt self-control, discipline and good character.
3 Always obtain permission from Sensei (instructor) before entering or leaving the tatami (mat).
4 Always rei (bow) as a sign of respect, when entering, or leaving the dojo or tatami. Always rei to your partner both before and after practicing or demonstrating techniques.
5 Only people with clean body’s, hair, judogi (judo suit) are permitted on the tatami.
6 Nothing should be worn under the judo jacket by men and boys: women and girls wear a clean, plain T-shirt. Nothing is worn on the feet unless agreed by the sensei.
7 Zories (flip flops) must be worn when walking to and from the tatami.
8 No jewellery sweets or similar objects are permitted on the tatami.
9 Long hair must be tied back with a soft band. All finger and toe nails must be kept short and smooth.
10 Judoka, when not practicing, should sit quietly. And in the correct position on the edge of the mat.
11 Judo must never be used outside the dojo, unless a serious self defence situation arises.
